One problem was that the bands were fading in and out a little which is why I tested on several bands and with AM stations as well as SSB. I tried to pick up typical low strength signals as string ones usually saturate the detector and do not have poop signal to noise ratios.

Although they came out slightly different I am still unsure which is the best. SDR++ has low CPU overheads and I initially though that it’s decoding was the best. However, when I did the side by side comparison it was not so simple. Ironically they all exhibit much better s/n (signal to noise ratio) that my 50 year old FT101 which is worrying!

Setting up a PI-Star MMDVM hotspot node with a Raspberry PI

The first thing is to download the Pi-Star software from https://www.pistar.uk/downloads/ , at time of writing the current version is Pi-Star_RPi_V4.1.5_21-Jun-2021.zip ,but you should get the latest available. I used a Raspberry PI 3B but it is possible to use a PI Zero W or other model. You should then use either Etcher, or the Raspberry Pi imager to copy the image to your SD card, which should be at least 4GB and Class 10 or better, I used a 16GB simply because they are available for little money these days. Simply put the SD card into your PI and attach a monitor and keyboard via USB connection. The PI should boot with the usual rainbow screen, the default login is pi-star and the password raspberry. The Trident multi Band aerial for scanners and sdr reception and transmitting

I wanted a Discone type aerial, they look great! Then I read some reviews and people said that a dual band dipole worked better. I also wanted to be able to use it for different bands. So on YouTube I found the best dual band aerial design I could. Then I found this 2M ground plane aerial/antenna . why not combine elements of both? So why would this work? Well, when an antenna or aerial is resonant it's impedance falls to around 50 Ohms. When it is outside resonance the impedance rises to several thousand Ohms and becomes irrelavent as it reduces the signal. So when you are on 2M the other tripod elements are ignored and you can achive good power transfer and gain. The same is true for each other band. I have seen this on other aerial designs too.
